I was asked in part of my brief to photograph magic hour. I did some research on flickr and google to get some inspiration from other people. Here's a couple of examples from a photographer who's work I liked:

These images were taken by a photographer called Scott Kroeker, an American photographer, i found on flickr.com. I really like how this photographer uses such beautiful reflections in his images. Both of these images will have been taken on a DSLR using a wide angle lens and are both, obviously, taken at magic hour.
I emailed him asking if I was okay to use a few of his images on here as reference and of course he said yes. This is his link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/22028229@N03/
After looking at a few more images on Magic Hour I realised that most of the images are captured when the sun turns pink, just before or just after the sun has gone down.
So I looked up as to what time the sun would be setting on the day I was planning to shoot and made my way.
I went to a few different locations within the Rivington, Bolton, area on that one night and came out with different images.

Shutter Speed: 1/125, Aperture: 9.0, ISO: 100, Focal Length: 27.0
This image was taken just down the road from me, I saw that the sun was beaming down and causing a beautiful reflection on the puddle, I wanted to capture the reflection. Im not too sure about this image, as to whether I like how the sun looks.

Shutter speed: 1/50, Aperture: 16, ISO: 100, Focal Length: 27.0
Although this image is kind of the same as the one above with the sun facing into the lens, I prefer this shot as the sun isn't as bright. I like how the trees look as though they're silhouettes.

Shutter speed: 1/8, Aperture: 3.5, ISO: 100, Focal Length: 21.0
I wanted to try a different look to my next image instead of shooting into the sun so I tried capturing the sun through the trees, I'm not sure whether I like this or not though. I can't decide whether this makes the image interesting or boring. But like I tried doing, it is different to shooting into the sun which I have done with most of my other images.

Shutter Speed: 1/60, Aperture: 3.5, ISO: 100, Focal Length: 21.0
When I was walking to the castle at Rivington, I saw this gate and the sun coming through the trees across the field. This reminded me of a country kind of image. I wanted to capture this as best as I could so I took this image quite a few times at different focal lengths like Dorothea Lange did with 'Migrant Mother'. This was the best image of them all.

This image was taken from the castle at Rivington. I chose this sport because I like how the sun sets behind the trees and makes the trees in the foreground turn into silhouettes and the reflections on reservoir. This image was taken without any filters. I placed the camera on my tripod and set the camera up to:
Shutter speed: 1/60th, Aperture: 16.0, ISO: 400, Focal Length: 21.0

Shutter Speed: 1/250, Aperture: 16.0, ISO: 400, Focal Length: 21.0
For this image I added a blue filter onto my camera to give the image a cold feel to it. I quite like the effect that the filter has given the image. It was a cold night when I took this picture.

Shutter speed: 1/500, Aperture: 16.0, ISO: 400, 21.0
This image was taken with a grey filter neutralising the image. It made the image look darker, but I like this. It gives the image a kind of romantic eery look to it.

Shutter speed: 1/60, Aperture: 16.0, ISO: 400, Focal Length: 21.0
I added a star filter to this image giving the sun a bursting effect.

Shutter speed: 1/15, Aperture: 5.6, ISO: 400, Focal Length: 18.0
This image was taken when I was on my way home. It took me ages to get this image, I didn't really like the other images because the land was so dark and there were a few things on the land which I wanted to capture. But if I had made the image light enough to capture the things on the land I wanted to then the sky would have been to bright. I love how there is a streak of pink in the sky on this picture.

Shutter speed: 1/200, Aperture: 5.0, ISO: 400, Focal Length: 18.0
I took this when I was on holiday in St. Ives over summer. I was taking a walk with my day just as the sun was setting over the headland and we came across this church. I loved how the church looked with the sea, the headland and the sunset in the background.

Shutter Speed: 1/200, Aperture: 6.3, ISO: 400, Focal Length: 18.0
This is probably my favourite image out of the lot. Again the image was taken when I was in St.Ives over the summer. The clouds are a really good effect and I like how they stand out. I think that the silhouets of the people add a really nice effect and give it that holiday feeling.
These are the contact sheets from the 'Magic Hour' shoots.
